UNILAG Set To Hosts Summer School In Digital Humanities From July 10 To 15

The University of Lagos will host the first Summer School in Digital Humanities from July 10 to 15, 2017.

The convener of the programme, Tunde Opeibi, in a statement on Monday, said the school was the first of its kind in the varsity.

Opeibi, an Associate Professor in New Media and Digital Cultures in UNILAG, explained that the summer school, themed, The Humanities in the Age of Technology: a Multidisciplinary Exploration of Digital Tools for Innovation and Development, was in collaboration with an international research group, Global Outlook: Digital Humanities.

According to the statement, expected speakers include Prof. Dan O’Donnell of the University of Lethbridge, Canada; Prof. Ronald J. Stephens, Purdue University, Indianapolis; Dr. Presley Ifukor, University of Muenster, Germany; Dr. Paige Morgan, University of Miami, Florida, among others.

“The Lagos Summer School in Digital Humanities 2017 is organised to raise, train and equip a new generation of scholars and researchers in the humanities in the global south: that is equipped with digital tools to conduct cutting-edge research and compete on the global stage, he said.

“It also creates a multidisciplinary forum for debates, conversation and discussion on the role of digital technologies in research, innovation and development. It ultimately anticipates producing scholarly contributions that will contribute to the ongoing efforts to build a knowledge-based Nigerian society,” the statement said in part.

The workshop is said to offer 10 workshop streams for doctoral students, junior scientists and early career scholars and researchers.

The convener, Opeibi, is a former Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Speech and Communications and a visiting Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany.
